Lash Lift and Tint vs. Lash Extensions: Which One Is Right for You?
Lash Lift or Lash Extensions… Which one should you choose? Both enhance your natural look and accentuate your eyes, but they serve different purposes.
This guide will compare everything there is to know about both services, so you can make an informed decision. Keep reading to find out which one would work better for you based on your lifestyle and goals.
Understanding Your Options: What Are Lash Lifts, Tints & Extensions?
First things first. Let's dig into each one of those services to cover exactly what they entail before comparing them. Understanding the difference between a lift + tint and eyelash extensions can help you make the right choice.
What Is a Lash Lift?
It is like a perm for your eyelashes; a semi-permanent beauty service to enhance a person's look. It involves using chemical solutions to soften and style the hair.
The lash becomes curlier and stays in that position for several weeks. The effect fades as the eyelash completes its growth cycle: grows, falls, and is replaced with a new one growing in, often straight or downward.
The appointment is relatively quick - up to 60 minutes and the eyes are closed the entire time.
What Is a Lash Tint?
Tinting is a process of giving your eyelashes a darker color. Usually it’s black, but it could also be brown for a softer look or blue-black for a bolder look. Tint doesn’t make your lashes fuller, but it does make them appear longer and more defined.
Our lashes tend to lose their color on the tips, making them transparent and visibly shorter. It is a perfect add-on to a lash lift, as it will truly make your eyes pop.
What Are Eyelash Extensions?
Extensions are an enhancement that involves attaching individual or multiple eyelashes to your natural ones. They could look natural with a classic lash extensions or hybrid set or pretty dark and dense with volume sets.
It is a perfect option for someone who wants a little glam in everyday life and a “wake up with makeup” type of look.
Extensions come in many styles to complement your eyes, cover gaps, or even improve eye symmetry. The initial appointment takes about 2 hours, but lash refills are quicker 60-90 minutes. Daily washing and brushing is recommended to prolong the results.
Key Differences: Lash Extensions vs. Lash Lift & Tint
Let’s compare the two services side by side. How they look, how long they take, and more. Use this table as a quick reference. There are many features to consider!
| Lash Extensions | Lash Lift and Tint | |
|---|---|---|
| Look/appearance | Create a fuller look. Can be as natural or as dramatic as you’d like | Makes your natural lashes curlier and darker. Doesn’t make them fuller or longer. Only enhances what’s already there |
| Adds length/volume | Yes | No |
| Maintenance level | Moderate: daily washing and brushing. Refills every 2-3 weeks. Requires removal when no longer needed. | Easy to maintain. No special aftercare after the first 24 h. The effect will slowly fade. |
| Longevity | With no regular fills the extensions will last up to 4 weeks. | The average is 6 weeks, but some people go up to 8. |
| Appointment time | Approximately 2 hours for your first appointment and 60-90 minutes for refills | Each appointment takes about 60 minutes. |
| Fill frequency | Every 2-3 weeks is ideal to maintain the perfect look | No need for touch-ups |
| Cost structure | Depends on the area and expertise of the artist. Anywhere between $150 and $300 | Also depends, but the average is $120-160. |
| Water/swimming restrictions | No restrictions after 24 hours. | No restrictions after 24 hours. |
| Best suited for | Most lash types, but especially if eyelashes are short, sparse, or uneven. | Medium-long lashes that are visible, but light in color, straight or downward. |
| Mascara compatibility | Mascara is not recommended. Even the one that says it is suitable for extensions will affect retention. | Can absolutely wear mascara. The results will look even more pronounced |
I truly hope this helped answer some of your questions and got you closer to making a decision. To summarize, I’d say Lift and Tint is perfect if your eyelashes are already long, just lacking a curl and color. It is also more budget-friendly and requires fewer trips to the salon. Do consider extensions, if you’d like wake-up-ready glam and more eye-catching finish. It could also be a better choice for special occasions.
Pros and Cons: Making an Informed Decision
If your morning routine cannot exist without mascara – you are not alone. Whether you are a busy mom running errands or a professional rushing to a morning meeting you can appreciate a time-saving routine.
When it comes to enhancements, these two options are the most popular. Let's discuss pros and cons next so you pick the style that will help you achieve your beauty goals.
Lash Lift and Tint: Advantages & Disadvantages
A few other things to consider before scheduling your first appointment. The points below should give you a complete picture.
Advantages
- Natural look
Enhances your own eyelashes. Gives the most delicate finish. “Barely there” glam. - Low maintenance
No water around the eyes for 24 hours after the service, and that is it! It cannot get any easier. - Cost
About $120, which is generally more affordable than extensions. No need for lash refills. - Water-friendly
Can use a pool, sauna, hot showers with no restrictions, after keeping the area dry for 24 hours.
Disadvantages
- Doesn't add length/volume
The conditions of your natural eyelashes play a major role in how the results will turn out. - Limited customization
It can be a soft curl or a bit more dramatic curl, but not much else. Cannot be customized in cat-eye, wispy and so on. - Minimal difference
For some people, especially with shorter eyelashes or someone who is used to extensions, a lift may not provide the appearance they hope for.
Lash Extensions: Advantages & Disadvantages
As with any beauty treatment, there are pros and cons. Here’s what to know before you commit.
Advantages
- Dramatic results
Even when there is not a lot of eyelashes to work with or they are short, the dramatic results can still be achieved through volume and length. - Customizations
Can be wispy, doll eye, cat-eye, Kim K effect, you name it. It can truly create a head-turning effect. - No mascara needed
It can save you those valuable minutes in the morning. Even with no makeup at all you will look ready and put together.
Disadvantages
- Higher cost
Definitely more luxurious, high-end service. Not a budget-friendly option. - Time commitment
The initial service can take anywhere between 1.5 to 3 hours depending on volume and style. Lash Refills are recommended every 2-3 weeks. Most people go every 3. Anything after 3.5 weeks is usually considered a full set and will take another 2 hours. - Aftercare
More strict aftercare: 24 hours no shower, sauna, or steam; but even after 24 hours, you have to be careful not to rub your eyelids and not to use oil-based products.
Which One Matches Your Lifestyle? Decision Guide
A common reason why our clients get those services is to look great 24/7 - at work, on vacation, during Zoom meetings, or just have a little something to lift up the mood daily. Both services are great, but they serve different purposes. Read the decision guide below and see if one of those scenarios sounds like you!
Choose Lash Lift & Tint if you...
- Use a curler and mascara daily. Happy with the length but don’t like that eyelashes grow straight or downward.
- Have sensitive eyes. If you don’t like the idea of anything artificial around your eyes.
- Previously had an allergy to extensions and are looking for an alternative.
- Cannot spare time for lash refills every 2-3 weeks.
- Want to enhance your look, but have a limited budget.
Choose Lash Extensions if you…
- Would like a more glamorous look. Mascara just doesn’t cut it for you.
- Wear strip or false eyelashes often.
- Wear makeup daily and spend a lot of time fixing mascara smudges.
- Have a photoshoot, special occasion, wedding soon.
- Looking for an immediate wow-effect
Consider BOTH if you...
- Have different preferences at different times. For example, you are ok with lifts generally, but prefer a more glamorous look for vacation.
- Currently wearing extensions, but would like to take a break. Many people do removal and a lash lift during the same appointment.
- Go to the gym often. On one hand, a lift seems like an easier option as water/sweat doesn’t affect it. On the other hand, extensions make you look like you wear make-up and some people love exactly that.
Cost Breakdown: What to Expect
Cost is an important factor to consider. Though, at our salon, we notice that clients make their decisions based on their lifestyle and how they want to look over how much it costs.
Lift and Tint. It generally costs $100-$160 depending on master’s level, locations, and materials used. Most people come every 2 months. So, the annual cost can be anywhere between $600 and $960, with an average of $780/annually.
Extensions. Let’s use the most popular set and refill frequency for this calculation. That will be a light volume set. Most salons charge between $220 to $300 for this set. Refills are anywhere between $110 and $170, with an average of $140. 52 weeks/3 = 17 visits over the course of the year. So, initial set of $280 + 16*$140= $2,520/annually.
Maintenance & Aftercare: What's Required?
We briefly covered aftercare for both services, but let's look at this closely to help you make the right decision.
Lash Extension aftercare requirements:
- Right after the service
You will be advised to keep your extensions dry for the first 24 hours. This time is necessary to allow the glue to completely dry. - Daily Care
It is essential that you wash and brush your extensions daily. Ideally, with a special shampoo designed to keep your lash line clean without overdrying your eyelids. - Product restrictions
Lash techs recommend avoiding oil-based products around your eyes as the oil in time will loosen up the glue. - Fill schedule
The best way to keep your set looking fresh is scheduling your appointments 2-3 weeks apart.
Lash Lift & Tint aftercare requirements:
- First 24 hours
24 hours after the service the eyes should be kept clean and dry. It is important for the curl to set so it can last longer. - After 24 hours
It is recommended to wash your eyelashes gently (no rubbing) and nourish them with a hydrating serum.
Making Your Decision: Final Considerations
We covered a lot of aspects of both services and hope you have all the details on hand to make a decision. A few things that will play a major role and should be considered are the condition of your natural eyelashes (short, long, sparse, or downward-growing), your desired look (soft and subtle or glamorous), and time and associated costs.
The good news is that whatever you choose can be changed if need be. Both services are semi-permanent, giving you flexibility and ability to change your mind.
