Does gel ruin my nail health? No. The fingernail is a hard keratin-based plate that protects your fingers and toes and is dead, the alive part is the matrix, and it is hidden far under the cuticle and we, as artists, do not touch that part, neither we have access to it. Gel helps to protect that plate from breaking, chemicals, and even accidental damage.
Do I need to take a break from manicures and let nails breathe? No. Since the plate is made out of dead keratin cells (just like hair), nothing you apply topically can be absorbed or affect the growth. It also cannot “breathe” as this hard structure is waterproof and not penetrable. On the contrary, regular cuticle care and shaping helps ensure the overall fingernail health.
How often should I get a manicure? If you prefer a simple naked mani: no polish, no color, only gentle cuticle care + shaping, then you can come in as often as every 2 weeks. When we apply gel, we create an apex. As the nail grows, the apex moves towards the tip and increases the chance of breaking. Ideally, we recommend coming every 3 weeks. In reality, most of our clients come back in 4-6 weeks because that’s when the gel starts chipping.
Can I get a manicure if I have weak or damaged nails? Yes, with a very important note - you have to choose an experienced professional with knowledge about nail anatomy. At Beauty Republic, we aim to strengthen your nail plate. If a previous service caused an external damage, we can apply a base that will act as a protector from heat, cold, or damage. It will not reverse the harm, but ensure a new, healthy growth.
What is the difference between gel manicures and regular manicures? Regular manis include traditional polish application that needs time to air dry and doesn’t require LED. It is more flexible if you like color changes but it is not as durable. Gel application involves multiple layers of base, color, and top. It is not as prone to chipping as regular polish. At Beauty Republic, we have an option for No Polish or Gel Polish.
What is SNS or Dip Powder? SNS or Dip Powder is a popular technique where your fingers are dipped in the colored powder vs gel polishes that are applied topically. It is durable, thinner than acrylic, and there is a huge variety of colors. The main concern is hygiene, as fingers are dipped in the same container by multiple clients. Removing dip powder is challenging and most salons still soak the fingers in acetone.
Do you offer SNS or Dip Powder manicures? No, because we care deeply about your health. Proper hygiene is our top priority. Double dipping in the same container is never recommended when the product is touching multiple people. It is almost impossible to follow disinfecting protocols and we cannot compromise on that. If you had dip powder previously, we charge $25 for removal.
Is there an extra charge for nail art or designs? Yes. Your fingernails are a canvas for self-expression. We have a huge collection of stamps and foils, and our artists can even draw something on your nail. If you have a design in mind we recommend that you send it to us prior to your appointment so our artist can allocate enough time. Art and/or design are $5/each or $30 for all ten. It requires years of practice, talent, additional courses, and products and it also takes extra time.
