Basic facials are one of the most accessible and convenient ways to achieve healthy-looking skin. They help rejuvenate and brighten the complexion and maintain the glow. It is a great addition to your home-care routine. In this article, we’ll cover what a basic facial consists of, steps involved, popular types and also how to get the best results from your appointment.
What Does a Basic Facial Consist of?
In simple terms, a basic facial is a spa treatment where a professional esthetician uses active products to address specific skin care concerns. The main benefit is that the esthetician is actually trained in skin anatomy and product chemistry and knowledgeable about skin functions. During the facial, the esthetician analyzes your skin and can not only help figure out your skin type but also suggest the correct products to use, so you can achieve your goals. Regular facials can be a great tool for dealing with breakouts, acne, pigmentation, post-acne scarring, redness, dehydration, premature aging, and so on.
There are many kinds of facial treatments available and it can be overwhelming to understand which one you need. So we will dive into the typical steps of a basic facial, as those are usually the fundamentals of any other treatment available.
Basic Facial Steps: What Happens During a Treatment
Most facials consist of a structured sequence of steps that are customized to the client’s skin type. It typically includes the following:
Step 1: Consultation and Skin Analysis
This is a crucial step of every treatment. The esthetician reviews your concerns, your current routine and habits, and based on all the gathered info, chooses a protocol that will suit you best.
Step 2: Cleanse
Every single facial you can think of starts with a good cleanse. It removes makeup, skin care products, and excess oils to prep your skin for treatment. Usually done with either gel or cream cleanser.
Step 3: Exfoliation
Our epidermis renews approximately every 28 days and that top layer needs to be removed to achieve a brighter complexion, allow products to penetrate more deeply, and maintain a clear, non-clogged appearance.
Step 4: Extraction
Probably your least favorite part, but hey, it does bring results! The esthetician gently (hopefully!) removes blackheads and clears the pores from clogging. When done professionally, there are steps before and after that help ensure that the process is nearly painless and comfortable.
Step 5: Facial Massage
Favorite part for most people! You’ll feel deep relaxation, but the main point of the massage is to support lymphatic drainage, boost circulation, improve elasticity and firmness. It temporarily diminishes the signs of aging. Not every facial has this step, but most places offer it as an add-on.
Step 6: Mask
A customized mask is usually applied at the end of the facial. When the mask is on, that’s your sign that the time is almost over. There are several types that can be used: hydrating, soothing, clarifying, or anti-aging. The masks can help rejuvenate, soothe and plump. And it feels great as well!
Step 7: Serum, Moisturizer & Sunscreen
Application of finishing products is usually the very last step. It could be just the sunscreen, or it could be a full routine with toner, serum, oil, moisturizer, and of course, a sunscreen. SPF is always applied at the end to protect your skin from sun damage.
What Does a Basic Facial Do for Your Skin?
There are several benefits of regular facials.
- Improved hydration. Even after one service, you will have a noticeably supple complexion. After the layer of dead skin cells is removed, even your home-care products will start working better.
- Less clogging. For a few days or weeks, you will enjoy great skin with no whiteheads or blackheads. P.S. It is normal to see new clogging the very next day. The pimples start forming long before presenting themselves on the surface, so yeah, unfortunately, there is no guarantee for clear pores for weeks.
- Assistance with collagen production. Even though it is a myth that if you apply collagen topically, it is going to replace collagen in the cells, regular facials can assist in healthy collagen production by stimulating the skin with exfoliation and massage.
- Brighter complexion. More so if you add dermaplaning, but even with just a peel or enzyme, you’ll see some improvement in color. Though older dark spots may take some time to start responding. They will not disappear after one treatment, unfortunately.
However, the individual results may vary and it is normal not to see the results after one treatment. It is still a cosmetic procedure and not a full-on invasive treatment. It will surely help with hydration, but to see noticeable results, you will most likely need a few treatments and a good home-care routine.
Types of Facials: Beyond the Basic Treatment
| Type | Best For | Not suitable for | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dermaplaning | Dehydrated/Dry Skin | Inflamed Acne | Removes peach fuzz and the top layer of the skin. |
| Dermabrasion | Non-inflamed acne, aging, dehydration | Inflamed Acne, Sensitivity, Broken Capillaries | Effective physical exfoliation, helps lighten hyperpigmentation and smooth out the surface. |
| HydraFacial | Most types | Active rash, severe inflammation | Vacuum extractions. Clears the pores with no manual squeezing. |
| DMK Enzyme Therapy | All Types | Extremely compromised barrier. | Works beyond the surface. Improves your skin functions. |
| LED Light Therapy | All Types | Photosensitivity disorders | Depending on the length of the wave provides multiple benefits |
| Microcurrent | Signs of aging, Fine Lines, Wrinkles | Many contraindications. | Stimulates facial muscles, providing a temporary lifting look. Little to no downtime. |
Those are the most common non-invasive treatments that are widely available. The esthetician can advise on the right choice based on your specific needs. Please note that none of them are suitable for recent laser, sunburn, use of Accutane, or rosacea/psoriasis flare-ups.
How to Get the Best Results from a Basic Facial
Coming to a facial is great! It is definitely a step towards healthier skin. There are a few things you can do to get even better results with minimum investment.
BEFORE.
- Do not pick at your skin. I repeat! Do not touch those pimples. Let the professional do the work. We promise - it’s worth it!
- 48 hours before stop all the actives: retinoids, peels, scrubs.
- Wear sunscreen. The facial cannot be performed on the surface that was recently burned.
- No tanning beds. Can’t believe we have to even say that!
- No at-home masks containing honey, lemon, or anything from your fridge.
DURING
- Let the esthetician know about any allergies and medications.
- Mention products you already use and ask for input.
- Ask about your skin type and what the esthetician sees. This will help you make informed decisions about products/treatments.
- If anything feels wrong: peel is too strong, extractions are too painful, LED light is uncomfortable - communicate immediately.
AFTER
- Same day: no gym, pool, sauna, beach.
- Sunscreen daily - non-negotiable.
- No active products: retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, peels, scrubs for 48 hours after.
- Rebook your treatment in a month (or based on your esthetician’s advice)
- Use your home care religiously. Consistency is key!
